Help! Health Question

Postby smashley » Tue Apr 14, 2009 6:57 pm

I have a 4 month old mini lop who has recently taken to lying on her side. Not her side like the relaxed pose with their hips to the side and upper half of the body upright but more how a dog lays on its side. Other than this peculiar new behavior she seems fine, she is vivacious, eating and drinking well and producing normal pellets and urine. She does not feel warmer or cooler than usual, her ears and nose are clear, and I found no signs of fleas or mites. She goes into this laying position by doing an almost playful kind of roll, usually after she is sleeping in a normal upright position. She responds like normal when she is on her side. I'm just really concerned because she is so little and new. Since all other behavior is normal I don't want to jump to take her to a costly vet visit. Does anyone else have a rabbit who likes to sleep in this pose or do you think it is a serious health concern? Thank you for your help!!

Well I would suggest not to take any chances. When rabbits act such way that seems new/abnormal its better to consult a vet ASAP.

My rabbit is 7 months old and he started "relaxing" in that position several months ago! Some times, when he is laying like that, he even puts his head down on his little blanket and stays like that until he hears a noise!! so if I'm very quite it might take him 15 minutes before he raises his head again. And about that playful roll, my rabbit is so clumsy that sometimes his roll is so "fast" that he ends up laying on his back for several seconds until he manages to turn to his side. So I'm pretty sure that there is nothing to worry about!

Don't worry. :) I have a half Mini Rex buck who looks like he's dead when he sleeps. It's a little disconcerting to go to the hutch and see him laying stretched out, on his side, with his head rolled back and his eyes half shut, but you can see his eyes have rolled back. Very unusual. They are like people in some ways. They pile up on each other when it's really hot!
