Right ways of feeding rabbits

Taking care of rabbits and feeding them is not only about carrots and hence you need to have a good idea about the digestive systems of a rabbit. Hay is one of the best foods for rabbits and so you should supply them with fresh hay at all times. You should keep in mind that feeding your rabbit a variety of hay can also be a good idea as this would provide them with different texture and fiber content. One of the best forms of hay for them is Alfalfa Hay, which is given to pregnant does and rabbits under 6 months of age. But this hay can be too rich for most adult rabbits and excess of the same can lead to health problems.

Usually Timothy Hay is favored a lot by rabbits, and this hay is carried most commonly in pet stores. Oat Hay can be given to them once in a while as it is thicker and helps to keep their sharp teeth in check. Orchard Grass can be given for bedding, along with eating as it has a very softer texture. You can also opt for pellet feeding, which is a good way to avoid giving the rabbit gourmet pellets or provide the same as an occasional treat. These gourmet pellets consist of honey, peanuts, colored cereal and other artificial additives.

Try to give rabbits of 6 months of age about 2-3 tablespoons of alfalfa pellets, or calculate it on basis of five pounds of body weight per day. For the pregnant does and babies under 6 months you can give pellets they desire. Green veggies and fruits are also enjoyed by rabbits but avoid cabbage and cauliflower, along with grapes, raisins, and bananas. Also iceberg lettuce would not provide them with any kind of nutrition.
